Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) is a flowering perennial plant native to North America. It was used for centuries by Native Americans to support the kidneys, menstrual health, digestive health and to support calmness*. The name skullcap refers to the flowers resemblance to helmets worn by European soldiers.
It is in the Lamiacea or mint plant family. The flowers range from pink to blue in color. There is some confusion in the herbal industry because a different species, Chinese skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis), has also been used for centuries in Chinese Folklore. Here we are referring to American Skullcap.
